Yellow and orange are some of the most underrated colors in mahjong. There aren’t nearly as many yellow and orange sets (or mats!) as there are pinks, greens and blues, but the ones that exist are some of the most joyful, warm and memorable tiles out there. Here are my favorites, with links to every match I’ve mocked up for each one.
Orange mahjong tiles
1. Oh My Mahjong Sierra
Best for: an earthy, vintage-feeling orange.
Sierra is my favorite orange, and I could go on and on about it. Its palette is inspired by the desert landscape of the Sierra Nevada: burnt orange backs with layers of white, the palest blue and a bright olive green. But the real magic is in the faces. The gold accents on the cracks, dragons and flowers are BEAUTIFUL in person and hard to capture in a photo. It’s a burnt orange with a little brown in it, so it reads earthy instead of loud, and if there’s a better solid-back fall tile, I haven’t found it yet. See every match in my Sierra album.

Best for: a warm, peachy orange that leans pink.
Solara is a beautiful warm, peachy solid back with soft muted layers of pistachio and light blue. Its backs are tonally peach and orange but warm-leaning into pink: surrounded by pinks it looks pinker, and without pink it looks decidedly peachy. Best for: pure sunshine.
Pippa is a sunshine-y little fiesta of a tile, with sunny yellow backs and coral pink and mint layers. Yellow is the color of happiness and joy, and Pippa delivers. Retired yellow and orange sets worth hunting down
- Oh My Mahjong Sunset: a bright, bold orange with zero chill. If you love a true orange, it’s worth tracking down.
- Oh My Mahjong Sorbet: a soft, buttery yellow that’s so pretty with citrus and mint mats.
Both are retired, so look for them secondhand in mahjong buy/sell groups. Every match I’ve mocked up is still in their albums.
How to style yellow and orange mahjong tiles
- Lean into citrus. Lemon, orange and fruit prints are a natural match for yellow and orange tiles.
- Add blue. Blue is orange’s complement, so blue and white mats and racks make orange and yellow tiles pop.
- Go earthy for fall. Burnt orange and butterscotch love leather, wood racks, rattan and olive green.
- Use a light rack. White, opal or natural wood racks keep a bright table from feeling too busy.
