Mahjong Buying Guide: How to Pick Tiles, a Mat and Racks That Go Together

How to pick tiles, a mat and racks that go together, without buying the wrong thing first.

Buying your first designer mahjong setup is exciting, and a little overwhelming. There are hundreds of tile sets, mats and racks out there, and they don't all play nicely together. I've matched hundreds of combinations in my tile match albums, and this is the order I'd shop in if I were starting over.

Step 1: Start with your tiles

Tiles are the biggest purchase and the hardest to swap, so choose them first and let everything else follow. Two things matter most:

  • The back color. This is what you see most during play. Natural-texture backs like burl, wood, bamboo, pearl, tortoise and jade act like neutrals and match the most mats. Bright solid backs are gorgeous but pickier.
  • The face colors. The faces carry your color story. A mat only needs to echo one or two of them to look intentional.

A versatile set is a smart first buy, but versatile for you matters just as much. A pastel Pearlescent set is very different from a moody wood-look burl like Heritage or Smith, so do a little soul searching first:

  • What's your decorating style? Coastal, organic, minimalist, traditional?
  • What's your clothing style? Which three colors dominate your wardrobe?
  • How will you use it? One set or several? Kept out in your home? Mats and tiles changed often, seasonally or never?

If you live for coastal blues, a blue set may be the most versatile set for you. If you're a total pink fanatic, a mid-tone pink like Virora Petalée or a brighter Oh My Mahjong Amara will get way more mileage than a neutral. A great exercise: browse my tile match albums, pin every setup you love without overthinking it, then look for the colors, styles and motifs that repeat. Drawn to several styles? Pull up a chair, you may be a collector in the making!

Step 2: Pick a mat that echoes your tiles

A mat is the easiest way to change the whole look of your table, and most people end up owning more than one. A few rules I use when matching:

  • Repeat a face color. Pull one color from the tile faces into the mat, like the green in your Bams or the pink in your Dots.
  • Match the mood, not just the color. Bright, clean tiles want bright, clean mats. Muted, earthy tiles look best on muted, earthy mats. Mixing the two is where matches go wrong.
  • Let one thing be the star. A busy patterned mat pairs best with calmer tiles, and a bold tile set shines on a simpler mat.

Step 3: Add racks

Racks are the finishing touch. Clear acrylic racks work with absolutely everything, so they're a safe first pair. Colored racks look amazing when they pick up a color from your tiles or mat. I share my favorites in My Favorite Mahjong Racks.

Step 4: Style the table

When I set a table, I pick five things: tablecloth, mat, racks, a lamp and a dice dish. You don't need all of them, but a tablecloth and a dice dish in one of your tile colors make a setup feel finished. See a full example in my spring and summer table.

Buying tips that save money

  • Use a discount code. Code MAHJMATCH saves 10% at many of the brands I recommend. Every code is on the mahjong discount codes page.
  • Know which sets are retired. Retired sets often resell for more than they cost new. My albums mark retired tiles and mats so you know what's still available.
  • Buy versatile first, fun second. A neutral set and one versatile mat give you a table you'll use all year. Seasonal and statement sets are more fun once you have that base.

Mahjong Buying Guide FAQ

What should I buy first for mahjong?

Start with a tile set, ideally one with a natural-texture back like burl, tortoise or pearl, since it matches the most mats. Then add a mat that repeats one of the tile face colors, and finish with racks.

How do I know if a mahjong mat matches my tiles?

Look for a mat that repeats one or two of your tile face colors and shares the same mood. Bright tiles match bright mats, and muted tiles match muted mats. You can also look up your tiles in the Mahj Matchmaker tile match albums to see real pairings.

What color mahjong racks go with everything?

Clear acrylic racks go with every tile set and mat, which makes them the safest first pair.

Is there a discount code for mahjong tiles and mats?

Yes. Code MAHJMATCH saves 10% at many designer mahjong brands. See every code on the Mahj Matchmaker mahjong discount codes page.
